Emma Raducanu marked her return to tennis with a winning start at the Nottingham Open, defeating Ena Shibahara 6-1 6-4 in her first match since April. Raducanu expressed frustration over what she called "insane" line calls against her, feeling like she was "playing two v one" against Shibahara and umpire Ana Carvalho, with no electronic line-calling technology in use at the tournament.
The 21-year-old Briton's comments echoed similar complaints from fellow Briton Harriet Dart, who also contested incorrect line calls in her match the previous day. Raducanu, however, managed to overcome the challenges, stating, "It just makes me feel better that I managed to beat her and the umpire as well." Despite the adversity, she maintained a positive attitude throughout the match.
Raducanu's victory came after 713 days since her last appearance on grass, displaying her intent early by breaking Shibahara in the opening game. Despite a shaky finish where she lost momentum due to line call controversies, Raducanu secured the win, setting up a second-round clash with Daria Snigur. Her opponent, predominantly a doubles player, proved no match for Raducanu's performance in the early stages of the match.
Reflecting on her comeback, Raducanu expressed satisfaction with her performance, especially considering her extended break from competitive play. Meanwhile, top seed Ons Jabeur also secured a win, setting up a second-round encounter with Linda Fruhvirtova. The tournament organizers have been contacted for comment regarding the line call controversies.
