Qualifier Sonay Kartal Stuns Wimbledon with Upset Win, Sets Sights on Coco Gauff

Qualifier Sonay Kartal delighted the home crowd at Wimbledon on Wednesday with a hard-fought victory over France's Clara Burel, ranked 253 places above her, securing a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win on a lively Court Three. The 22-year-old's triumph set her up for a challenging third-round encounter against second-seeded American Coco Gauff, a match she anticipates with excitement, aiming to make the British fans proud.

 

Reflecting on her unexpected journey at Wimbledon, where she defeated 29th seed Sorana Cirstea in the first round, Kartal expressed her pride in overcoming injury and illness earlier in the year. "Monday was a high, and now I have topped that today," she remarked. "To come back and achieve my biggest wins since recovering, I'm super proud of that."

 

Despite losing momentum in the second set after initially leading, Kartal credited the crowd's support for revitalizing her spirits in the decisive third set. "I just tried to put everything behind me. When I needed the crowd the most, they helped me in that third set. I owe that to you guys today," she acknowledged gratefully to the cheering spectators.

 

Gauff, who advanced past Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni with ease earlier in the day, acknowledged the challenge of facing a British player on grass. "It will be tough to face a Brit obviously, especially on grass. I think that they always do really well, but especially in this environment," Gauff commented ahead of her upcoming clash with Kartal.
