Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson redeemed themselves from their Wimbledon disappointment by winning the men’s doubles title at the US Open. They secured a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz on Saturday, overcoming a challenging second set to clinch the championship.
The seventh-seeded Australians had previously fallen short in the Wimbledon doubles final in July, where they failed to convert three match points. This time, they needed three championship points to finally seal the win in New York after the German pair mounted a brief comeback in the second set.
During the trophy presentation, Thompson expressed his relief and joy, stating that winning a Grand Slam title had a special significance, especially after their Wimbledon heartbreak. He acknowledged the tension of the match points but praised their perseverance in securing the victory.
This triumph marked Purcell’s second Grand Slam doubles title, having won the 2022 Wimbledon final with Matthew Ebden, and Thompson’s first. Purcell and Thompson's victory is notable as they are the first all-Australian team to win the US Open men’s doubles title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996.
