Pegula's Stunning Comeback Sets Up US Open Final Clash with Sabalenka

Posted : 06 September 2024

Jessica Pegula staged an incredible comeback to defeat Karolina Muchova at the US Open on Thursday, securing her first-ever Grand Slam final appearance. Pegula, ranked world No. 6, recovered from a set and a break down to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the 52nd-ranked Muchova.

Reflecting on the match, Pegula admitted she felt overwhelmed at times but managed to turn things around in crucial moments. She now advances to face world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open champion, who reached her second consecutive US Open final by defeating Emma Navarro 6-3, 7-6 (7/2).

Pegula's journey to the final has been nothing short of remarkable, as she fought through adversity during the semifinal match. After losing the first set in just 28 minutes and trailing 2-0 in the second, she had to save a break point to avoid falling further behind. At that point, many spectators began to leave, anticipating another American defeat.

However, Pegula staged a remarkable comeback, winning eight of the last 10 games to secure her place in the final. Her determination and resilience were on full display, and she acknowledged that reaching a Grand Slam final had always been a childhood dream.

Muchova, who reached the semifinals in 2023 but had been sidelined for 10 months due to a wrist injury, struggled with unforced errors throughout the match. Her 40th unforced error sealed her fate on match point, and she admitted that a missed volley at a key moment in the second set allowed Pegula to seize control. Despite her disappointment, Muchova credited Pegula for her strong performance and acknowledged that she was simply outplayed in the latter stages of the match.

Sabalenka, on the other hand, faced a tough challenge in Emma Navarro, who pushed her to a second-set tiebreak. Despite a partisan crowd cheering for Navarro, Sabalenka remained composed, hitting 34 winners to Navarro’s 13 and securing her spot in the final.

The Belarusian star noted the shift in the crowd's support towards the end but brushed it off, declaring her readiness to face anyone in the final. Navarro, who had previously never made it past the first round of the US Open, expressed her determination to learn from the experience and return stronger in the future.
