Ostapenko rising as clay season builds momentum and progress

Posted : 22 April 2025

Jelena Ostapenko is beginning to rediscover the form that saw her claim the French Open title eight years ago, with her victory at the Stuttgart Open on Monday. During the tournament, she managed to defeat both the world No. 1 and No. 2 players, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, respectively, en route to the title.

Ostapenko made history by becoming the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012 to defeat both the top-ranked players in the same claycourt event. Her impressive performance saw her claim her ninth career title and her second on clay, which propelled her up the rankings to 18th in the world. This achievement has positioned her as a dark horse ahead of the upcoming French Open.

In her post-match interview, Ostapenko shared her sense of confidence throughout the week. "Honestly, I didn't tell anyone, but I felt confident since the first day," she admitted. "I had a strange feeling in a good way, and when I came here, I felt like something was going to happen."

The Latvian, who had previously defeated Swiatek on her way to the Doha final in February, believes her continuous improvement has played a significant role in her success. "I think I'm improving day by day, and I'm playing better and better. I think I deserve it," she said.

Despite her past Grand Slam victories, Ostapenko has not reached a final since her breakthrough at Roland Garros in 2017. However, this season, she feels liberated from the pressure of expectations, allowing her to perform at a high level. "I had enough pressure in my career," she reflected. "I didn’t feel it even though it was the final. In my mind, I was just playing a match."

Looking ahead, Ostapenko is set to compete in Madrid this week, where she aims to continue her strong form. She is also dreaming of making another deep run in Paris. "Obviously, I can play well on this surface," she acknowledged, setting her sights on the upcoming challenges.

"I will take it match by match, but anything can happen," she added, maintaining her optimistic approach as she prepares for the next phase of the season.
