Olympic-bound Nigerian table tennis star Aruna Quadri has maintained his status as the highest-ranked African tennis player, moving up to the 16th position in the World Table Tennis (WTT) rankings.

Quadri, in the continent's global rankings released today, amassed a total of 1280 points.

The 35-year-old was one of the high-profile names expected to light up the WTT Series Lagos 2024, but an injury has ruled him out of the tournament.

In his absence, some of the top players competing at the five-day championship arrived over the weekend, with contingents from India, China, and Korea touching down in Lagos yesterday in readiness for the preliminary matches which start tomorrow, June 19, 2024.

Nigerian attention will now be focused on Muizz Adegoke and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai as the local up-and-comers take their places in the main draw.

Both players made their WTT Series debuts in the qualifying rounds at last year’s WTT Contender Lagos 2023, and now get their first taste of main draw action in the competition.

This is the second-ever WTT Contender event to be staged in Nigeria, hosting table tennis talents from around the world for a week of high-octane action at the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
