Winners have emerged in the 7th edition of the Prince Victor Uwakwe Under-15 and Under-21 Regional Tennis Tournament for the South-East and South-South regions, held in Enugu.
The winners came from Anambra, Rivers, and Imo States in both categories of the tournament, which was organized by the Enugu State Tennis Association in collaboration with the Enugu Sports Club and sponsored by Prince Victor Uwakwe.
John Nubari from Rivers and Ezeh Chidimma from Anambra won the Under-21 male and female categories, respectively.
Chimaobi Isaac and Ayetuoma Fego from Imo and Rivers won the Under-15 categories, respectively.
Akwa-Ibom and Cross River States did not participate in the tournament.
Speaking at the grand finale on Saturday, Uwakwe stated that he sponsored the tournament to help young tennis enthusiasts develop their skills.
Uwakwe mentioned that many youths have a passion for tennis but lack opportunities to realize their dreams of becoming professional players.
“This event is designed to nurture young talent and prepare them for the future,” he said.
While urging the participants to remain committed to their training, Uwakwe promised that the next edition would surpass the current one.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Enugu Sports Club, Nnanna Atuonwu, described the four-day tournament as exciting and noted that no injuries were sustained.
Also speaking, Gab Agu, Chairman of the Enugu Tennis Association, commended the sponsor and highlighted the long history of tennis in Enugu. He appealed to the State Government to support the Enugu Sports Club and upgrade its infrastructure.
In his remarks, Enugu State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, emphasized that tennis requires more attention due to its potential to produce stars. He expressed regret that Nigeria has yet to fully tap into the abundant talent in tennis.
Ekweremadu encouraged the young tennis players to stay dedicated and reiterated the state government’s commitment to developing various sports activities.
“I am pleased that tennis is one of the sports we are interested in investing in. We will continue to work with the Sports Club and other stakeholders to develop tennis in Enugu, so that young people can benefit from it,” he said.
One of the winners, Isaac, described the match as tough but noted that his determination helped him succeed. “I am 14 years old from Imo and have been playing tennis for three years now. I hope to see myself playing internationally,” he said.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of trophies and cash prizes to the winners.
