Shammah Makpa, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), recently articulated the federation's ambitious goal of developing players to achieve world-class standards and set records on the global stage. Speaking during the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Junior J30 event in Abuja, Makpa emphasized that such competitions are integral to the federation's long-term strategy for player development.

According to Makpa, these tournaments provide a crucial platform for young players to showcase their talents and skills, which serves as a selection process for identifying the most promising talents who could potentially replace aging players in the future. He highlighted that exceptional performances in these events pave the way for young prospects to compete in upcoming competitions, thereby contributing to their growth and recognition in international tennis circles.

Makpa underscored the significance of hosting such a prestigious event in Nigeria, explaining that it has alleviated the financial burden associated with sponsoring players to travel abroad for tournaments. By hosting the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J30 locally at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the federation was able to accommodate a larger contingent of Nigerian players—between 30 to 60 participants—compared to the limited number that could have been sent if the event had been held overseas.

The ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J30 is not only a platform for competition but also a gateway for junior players to earn global rankings and accumulate valuable points. Makpa emphasized that participating in such tournaments enhances the exposure and competitive experience of young athletes, crucial for their development in the sport.

Furthermore, Makpa reiterated the federation's commitment to nurturing talent and preparing them for future international challenges. He stressed that the success of these junior tournaments reflects Nigeria's growing stature in the global tennis community and reinforces the federation's efforts to groom a new generation of tennis stars.

Looking ahead, Makpa expressed optimism about the impact of these developmental initiatives, believing they will yield positive results in the form of internationally competitive Nigerian tennis players. He highlighted that the strategic focus on youth development through tournaments like the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J30 aligns with broader objectives to elevate Nigeria's profile in the sport and cultivate a pipeline of skilled players capable of making significant strides on the world stage.

Makpa's remarks underscore the transformative potential of grassroots tennis development programs and the pivotal role of international tournaments in advancing Nigeria's tennis landscape. By leveraging such platforms, the NTF aims to not only foster talent but also establish a legacy of excellence in Nigerian tennis, setting the stage for future achievements at global competitions.
