Shammah Makpa, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), announced that the federation's camp will officially open on July 1 for Nigerian players participating in the 2024 Davis Cup qualifying rounds in Abuja, Africa Group III.
Makpa made this statement in an exclusive interview on Sunday in Abuja. He mentioned that the competition will take place from July 15 to 20 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
"The NTF has been diligently preparing for hosting this event in Abuja for the first time," Makpa said. "We are committed to ensuring everything goes according to plan for a successful competition."
Makpa explained that two key aspects are involved in preparing for the event: hosting responsibilities and Nigerian player participation.
"As hosts, we are ensuring that the facilities and necessary equipment are in excellent condition," he emphasized. "We have been actively preparing and making final adjustments to the venues."
He added that the Nigerian team has already started arriving at the camp ahead of the July 1 opening.
"We currently have between six and eight players in camp, out of whom five will represent Nigeria," Makpa noted. "Among them are experienced players such as David Ekpenyong, Daniel Adeleye, Uche Oparaojie, Michael Emmanuel, and Christopher Bulus. Three of them competed in the 2023 Davis Cup Africa Group IV qualifying rounds in Kigali, Rwanda."
Makpa highlighted their previous successes, stating, "They performed admirably in 2023, winning the majority of their matches, which led to Nigeria's qualification and promotion to Group III alongside Ghana."
He expressed confidence in the players' preparedness and anticipated a successful qualification with the support of the NTF board.
"A total of six countries, including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, and Ghana, are expected to participate," Makpa concluded. "They will compete for two slots in Group II during the qualifying rounds."
