Novak Djokovic: World No. 1 withdraws from the Srpska Open, but Dan Evans triumphs in Barcelona
Posted : 23 April 2023
The Srpska Open's top seed, Novak Djokovic, was eliminated after losing in straight sets against fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals.
In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Djokovic, 35, was defeated 6-4 7-6 (8-6) by the 70th-ranked player in the world.
It deals Djokovic another another setback as he prepares for the French Open later this month.
In the meantime, Britain's Dan Evans defeated Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo 2-6 7-5 6-3 to go to the semifinals of the Barcelona Open.
After making it to the last four in Marrakech at the beginning of April, British No. 2 Evans has now advanced to the semifinals in two of his most recent three competitions.
Next up for him is top seed Carlos Alcaraz, who advanced to the semifinals of the US Open after defeating fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
Lajovic will play fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the semi-finals as compensation for defeating Djokovic at the Srpska Open. Kecmanovic defeated Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic 7-5 6-0 to advance.
"I'm overwhelmed," said Lajovic. "It's the biggest win of my career. Beating him is something I didn't even think was possible, but it happened."
Djokovic has been bothered by a right elbow issue since his shocking loss to Lorenzo Musetti at the Monte Carlo Masters last week.
