Novak Djokovic withdraws from Shanghai Masters, eyes return at Paris Masters

Posted : 18 September 2023
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters this year, marking his absence from the ATP Tour for at least another month. Following his recent US Open victory, Djokovic participated in the Davis Cup for Serbia.

Now, he has chosen not to compete in China. The world's top-ranked player is expected to return to action at the Paris Masters, commencing on October 30, as he aims to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking.

Djokovic's busy schedule included helping Serbia qualify for the Davis Cup finals in Spain, where he played singles and doubles matches.

However, he has decided to take a break and will not be part of the Shanghai Masters, which marks the return of the ATP Tour to China after a hiatus since 2019.

Djokovic expressed his regret at missing the tournament, highlighting the incredible support he has received from fans in China over the years.

The Shanghai Masters, one of Djokovic's favored tournaments, begins on October 4. Djokovic has previously triumphed in Shanghai four times and boasts an impressive 34-5 record at the event.

With his absence from the Chinese tournament, Djokovic is likely to make his return to the tour at the Paris Masters, an event where he was the runner-up last year. This tournament serves as a precursor to the Nitto ATP Finals and the Davis Cup finals.

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is expected to be the top seed in the Shanghai Masters in Djokovic's absence. The tournament director, Michael Luevano, expressed disappointment at not having Djokovic participate but wished him well.

He also emphasized the exciting lineup of players, including defending champion Daniil Medvedev and rising talents like Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Jannik Sinner, who will make their debut in Shanghai, along with established stars like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev.
