Novak Djokovic, the two-time defending champion, announced on Tuesday that he will not participate in the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin due to an ongoing injury. The 37-year-old Serbian expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, “I was really looking forward to being there, but due to ongoing injury I won’t be playing next week.” He extended his apologies to fans who were eager to see him compete and wished the other players a successful tournament.
Currently ranked fifth in the world, Djokovic is also positioned sixth in “The Race,” the ATP's rankings system that determines the eight players who qualify for the Finals. His absence from the tournament means that he will miss a significant opportunity to compete against some of the top players in the world.
The event, scheduled to take place in northern Italy from November 10-17, has already seen several players secure their spots. Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Taylor Fritz are confirmed participants, leaving only three spots available for the remaining contenders.
As Djokovic steps back, players like Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev are vying for the last berths. Ruud and Rublev are currently competing in Metz, France, while De Minaur is playing in Belgrade, intensifying the competition for the coveted places in the Finals.
