Novak Djokovic wins Wimbledon first set defense over rain delay
Posted : 04 July 2023
Novak Djokovic, the defending Wimbledon champion, overcame a farcical rain delay to start his title defense with a victory. After winning the first set against Pedro Cachin of Argentina, play was halted for 80 minutes, despite the closed roof.
Djokovic amusingly used his towel to dry the court and even encouraged the crowd to "blow" in an attempt to expedite the process. Ground staff eventually resorted to using leaf blowers.
Although the delay was frustrating for both players and spectators, Djokovic maintained a positive attitude, finding humor in the situation. Once the roof was opened and the conditions improved, he and Cachin were able to resume the match.
Djokovic expressed his gratitude to the crowd and hoped they enjoyed the unconventional delay.
With his sights set on an eighth Wimbledon title to equal Roger Federer's record, Djokovic's next opponent will be Jordan Thompson of Australia.
Thompson, ranked 70th in the world, secured a hard-fought five-set victory over Brandon Nakashima, the 55th-ranked American player. Djokovic is determined to continue his campaign and make his mark in the tournament.
