Novak Djokovic wins his 23rd Grand Slam title in the French Open final

Posted : 11 June 2023
Novak Djokovic once again showcased his greatness by overcoming a challenging start to secure his 23rd Grand Slam title in the French Open final against Casper Ruud of Norway.

Despite a sluggish beginning, the 36-year-old Serbian displayed his quality in a first-set tie-break, setting the stage for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, 7-5 victory.

With this win, Djokovic surpasses Rafael Nadal to claim the outright lead in men's majors. Additionally, he becomes the first male player to win each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least three times.

His triumph on the clay courts of Paris brings him level with Serena Williams in terms of major titles, with only Margaret Court remaining ahead on 24 Grand Slam victories.

Djokovic will have the chance to match Court's record at Wimbledon next month, a tournament where he has already emerged victorious seven times. He is also the favorite to equal Roger Federer's record for the most men's titles.

Upon securing the championship point with Ruud's forehand error, Djokovic joyfully fell flat on his back in celebration. He then embraced his opponent before rushing to his support box, where he shared the moment with coach Goran Ivanisevic, wife Jelena, his children, parents Dijana and Srdjan, and NFL superstar Tom Brady.

Ruud, seeded fourth, graciously congratulated Djokovic on another remarkable achievement, acknowledging his opponent's continuous rewriting of tennis history. He expressed the difficulty in capturing Djokovic's greatness and emphasized the inspiration he provides to others.
