Former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic is taking a positive outlook from his performance at the Shanghai Masters, despite his loss to Jannik Sinner in the final. The Serbian star, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, experienced a challenging run at the US Open, where he was eliminated in the third round by Alexei Popyrin. However, Djokovic showcased his return to form in Shanghai, demonstrating consistent play throughout the tournament as he advanced to his fifth final at this prestigious ATP Masters 1000 event.
In the final, Djokovic fought hard but ultimately fell to Sinner, losing 7-6(4), 6-3. Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his level of play throughout the tournament, noting it was likely his best showing since the Olympics. He acknowledged Sinner's effectiveness in crucial moments, stating, "He deserved to win, he was just too strong in important moments." Despite feeling slightly fatigued, Djokovic remained optimistic about his ability to compete at the highest level.
The defeat also meant that Djokovic missed the opportunity to secure his 100th career singles title, a milestone achieved only by Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer. While he expressed a desire to reach this goal, he downplayed its significance, remarking that it is not a "live-or-die type of goal" for him. He emphasized that he has already accomplished many of his career aspirations and is now focused on Grand Slam victories and pushing his limits further.
Looking ahead, Djokovic is set to compete in the "Six Kings Slam," an exhibition event scheduled for October 16-19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he will be joined by top players including Sinner, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Holger Rune. Djokovic aims to build on his recent form and continue striving for excellence as he prepares for the upcoming matches.
