Novak Djokovic enjoys support from Serena Williams, other legends

Posted : 26 March 2025

Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open following a commanding straight-set victory over Lorenzo Musetti. Despite a weather delay due to heavy rain in Florida, the six-time Miami champion remained unaffected. With coach Andy Murray watching from the stands, Djokovic now prepares to face American Sebastian Korda in the next round after Korda defeated Gael Monfils. The match marked Djokovic’s impressive progress as he cruised past Musetti, reaching the last eight in Miami.

Although it has been an inconsistent season for Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam winner appears to be finding his form during the second leg of the Sunshine Double. His dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Musetti set up a quarter-final encounter with Korda. Djokovic expressed his gratitude to tennis stars Juan Martin del Potro and Serena Williams, who were present to support him during the match. "I was star-struck!" Djokovic admitted, feeling fortunate to have both legends in the crowd.

Djokovic was particularly thrilled to have del Potro, a long-time friend and rival, in his box for the first time. “It was amazing to have him here, and I’m so happy he came,” Djokovic shared. He also expressed surprise and joy when he saw Serena Williams, acknowledging her unexpected presence. “It was a surprise. I didn’t know she would be here,” he said with a smile.

The Serbian also recalled a special moment shared with Williams after he hit a stunning backhand winner, bringing him one game away from victory. “When I hit that down-the-line shot, I pointed to Serena and asked if it was okay,” Djokovic explained. “She said, ‘Yeah, it was fine,’ and if Serena says it was fine, then it was amazing!”

Although Djokovic was dominant overall, his start to the match was a bit rocky. He lost the first two points of his opening service game and was down 15-40, facing two break points. A double fault from Djokovic handed the game to Musetti, which surprised the Miami crowd. However, Djokovic quickly regained his focus, holding serve and breaking Musetti in the next game.

Despite an early challenge, Djokovic settled into his rhythm. After breaking Musetti once more, he won four consecutive games, including a crucial second break to lead 4-2. With newfound confidence, Djokovic cruised through the rest of the set, taking it 6-2. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Musetti unable to counter Djokovic's precise shot-making.

Djokovic continued his dominance, breaking Musetti's serve once again and extending his lead. After a brief fightback from Musetti, Djokovic finished strong, claiming the second set 6-2. His victory marked a resounding performance, ensuring his spot in the quarter-finals with an impressive win over Musetti.
