The organizers of the Madrid Open have announced that world number one Novak Djokovic will not be competing there next week.
Despite wishing Djokovic a "speedy recovery" in a statement, the event organizers have not revealed a reason for his withdrawal.
The right elbow issue has been bothering the 35-year-old Serb lately.
Rafael Nadal has already pulled out of the competition, which gets underway on Tuesday, since he is still having trouble recovering from a hip ailment.
Djokovic conceded his elbow was "not in an optimal condition" heading into the competition, but was defeated by fellow countryman Dusan Lajovic on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Srpska Open.
The previous week, when he lost to Lorenzo Musetti at the Monte Carlo Masters, the 22-time Grand Slam winner was wearing strapping on the affected area.
The Miami Open and Indian Wells were the only two events Djokovic has participated in since the beginning of March since he was unable to enter the country.
He is scheduled to start his pursuit of a total of 23 Grand Slam titles on May 28 at the French Open at Roland Garros.
