Nigeria Table Tennis sensation, Offiong canvasses for league in Nigeria

Posted : 04 July 2024

Nigeria's table tennis sensation, Edem Offiong, has emphasized the urgent need for a structured table tennis league in Nigeria rather than just clubs. In a recent interview discussing the 4th edition of a table tennis tournament for children aged 9 to 17, Offiong highlighted that a national league would significantly elevate the sport's profile and opportunities within the country.

"In Nigeria, we primarily have tennis clubs, but what we truly lack is a comprehensive league system. We have numerous talented players who are unable to afford travel expenses to compete internationally. Establishing a national table tennis league similar to football leagues would greatly enhance competitive opportunities and visibility for individual players," Offiong explained.

She stressed the potential impact of a league system in nurturing talent and fostering a competitive spirit among young players across Nigeria. Such a structure, she believes, would provide a platform for consistent training, exposure to higher levels of competition, and the development of a robust talent pipeline.

Offiong, who is set to represent Nigeria in Paris, France, highlighted that the exposure gained from participating in international competitions underscores the importance of domestic league structures in preparing athletes for such challenges.

"Having a league would not only benefit current players but also inspire and attract more youth to take up table tennis seriously. It would create a pathway for aspiring athletes to progress from grassroots programs to national and international stages," Offiong added.

She emphasized the role of organized competitions in promoting professionalism and discipline among players, crucial elements for long-term success in sports. A national league, according to Offiong, would also attract sponsors and investment, leading to improved facilities and training opportunities for Nigerian table tennis.

As Nigeria prepares to participate in global tournaments like the one in Paris, Offiong's advocacy for a league underscores the broader need to institutionalize and support the growth of table tennis as a major sport in the country. Her vision includes not only nurturing current talent but also laying a sustainable foundation for future generations of Nigerian table tennis stars.
