Nigeria comes crashing again as Table Tennis Star crashes out

Posted : 29 July 2024

France’s Yuan Jia Nan has ended Nigeria's hope of a podium finish in the table tennis event of the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics as she decisively defeated Nigeria's last woman standing, Fatimo Bello, in the Women’s Singles Round 2 match.

Jia Nan defeated Bello in a stunning display of skill and precision, ending the game with a clear 4-0 victory, thereby underscoring France’s prowess on the table tennis stage.

Bello’s elimination marks a tough day for Nigerian table tennis, following earlier exits of her compatriots.

In the first round, Nigeria’s Fola Alabi lost to Italy’s Lucia Rossi, 4-1. In another match, Maryam Kola faced a difficult challenge against China’s Li Mei, going down 4-2. Lastly, Adama Okoro struggled against Germany’s Anja Becker, resulting in a 4-3 defeat in a gripping contest.

Against this backdrop, Fatimo Bello’s match against Yuan Jia Nan was highly anticipated but ultimately disappointing for Nigerian fans.

From the first serve, Yuan’s tactical play and aggressive strikes overwhelmed Bello, who struggled to find a rhythm against her formidable opponent.

The first set saw Yuan establish dominance with a score of 11-1, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Bello showed moments of resilience, managing to increase her score in subsequent sets, but Yuan’s consistent performance proved too strong.

In the second set, Yuan continued her onslaught, winning 11-3. Bello’s attempts to counter were met with precise returns and sharp angles from Yuan, who seemed to anticipate every move with ease. The third set mirrored the previous, with Yuan securing another 11-3 victory.

The final set saw Bello’s brief rally, where she managed to score 5 points, yet Yuan’s relentless pressure led to an 11-5 finish.

The match ended with a scoreline reflecting Yuan’s dominance and Bello’s spirited but ultimately insufficient challenge.

With this result, Nigeria’s hopes in the Women’s Singles table tennis were dashed, as Fatimo Bello’s journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to an abrupt end. Yuan Jia Nan advances with impressive form, poised for further challenges as the tournament progresses.
