Nick Kyrgios to Make Comeback at Brisbane International Ahead of Australian Open

Posted : 15 November 2024

Nick Kyrgios, the former Wimbledon finalist, is set to make his return to competitive tennis at the Brisbane International, a key warm-up event for the Australian Open, in December and January, organizers announced on Friday. The 29-year-old Australian, who has been sidelined by knee, foot, and wrist injuries, is also scheduled to participate in the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi from December 19-22. Australian Open chief Craig Tiley has expressed confidence in seeing Kyrgios at the season-opening Grand Slam in January.

Kyrgios, who has only played one singles match in the past two years due to injury setbacks, shared his excitement about returning to tennis. "The Brisbane International has always been a great event and I have had some amazing memories there, particularly when I won the event in 2018," he said. He added that he is feeling fit and healthy and is eager to return to the sport after his long recovery. Playing during the Australian summer has been one of his goals, and he is thrilled to start his comeback at Brisbane, which he considers one of his favourite tournaments.

The Brisbane International will take place from December 29 to January 5, providing Kyrgios with an opportunity to regain match fitness ahead of the Australian Open, which runs from January 12-26. The tournament will serve as a crucial warm-up for the Australian, who has had a mixed history at Melbourne Park but remains a popular figure there. In his last singles appearance at the event in 2022, Kyrgios reached the second round before losing to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.

Before his injuries derailed his career, Kyrgios enjoyed a strong run at Wimbledon, where he reached the final, as well as a quarterfinal finish at the U.S. Open. His return to tennis at the Brisbane International marks the start of his comeback as he looks to regain his form and make a strong showing at the Australian Open.
