Fiery Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is set to make his comeback at the World Tennis League event in Abu Dhabi this December, with aspirations of winning a Grand Slam title to silence his critics. The former world number 13 has struggled with injuries to his knee, foot, and wrist, leading to a lengthy hiatus during which he played only one ATP Tour singles match in two years. Despite hints at retirement, Kyrgios remains committed to returning to the sport, expressing that something keeps him motivated to compete.
In an interview with News Corp's Code Sports, the 29-year-old emphasized his determination to achieve a Grand Slam victory, stating that it would be the ultimate way to prove doubters wrong. Kyrgios highlighted his past successes, including reaching the finals of a Grand Slam and winning a doubles title, but he believes that a Grand Slam win is the final piece of his career puzzle. "That'll be my deep motivation," he remarked, signaling his ambitions for the upcoming Australian Open in January.
Kyrgios, who has taken on commentary roles during his time away from competitive play, feels that the current tennis landscape presents a unique opportunity. With Nadal recently announcing his retirement and Djokovic nearing the end of his career at 37, Kyrgios sees the sport as "the most open it has ever been." Despite his earlier reputation for on-court outbursts, he now believes he is perceived differently, stating, "I don't think I carry that perception with the Aussie public anymore."
