Nick Kyrgios injures, misses US Open

Posted : 11 August 2023
The organizers of the US Open have confirmed that Nick Kyrgios will not be participating in the tournament due to injury.

The Australian tennis player has grappled with a series of injuries throughout this year, participating in just one ATP Tour match in 2023. Kyrgios had to skip Wimbledon due to a wrist injury, and earlier, knee and foot injuries prevented his participation in the Australian Open and French Open respectively.

As a consequence of his limited time on the court, the 28-year-old's ranking has fallen significantly, dropping 57 places to 92 in the world rankings.

Scheduled to take place from August 28th to September 10th in New York, the US Open will miss Kyrgios, who experienced the pinnacle of his career in 2022. During that year, he reached his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon and achieved a career-high ranking of 11 in the world.

In January, he withdrew from the Australian Open just prior to the tournament due to a knee injury that necessitated surgery. Kyrgios made a return to competition at the Stuttgart Open in June, but faced challenges in movement during a first-round loss to China's Wu Yibing.

Although Kyrgios made it to London for Wimbledon, where he had been the runner-up against Novak Djokovic the previous year, he withdrew due to a wrist issue just a day before the tournament began.

With this withdrawal, it is likely that Kyrgios will drop out of the top 100 when the updated world rankings are released on Monday.

In terms of his US Open record, Kyrgios' most notable performance was in the previous year when he reached the quarter-finals before being defeated in a five-set match against Russia's Karen Khachanov.

In addition to Kyrgios, Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff has also pulled out of the 2023 tournament. Consequently, Argentine players Diego Schwartzman and Facundo Diaz Acosta have been elevated to the main draw as replacements for Kyrgios and Struff.
