Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his struggles with mental health, revealing that he contemplated suicide and spent time in a psychiatric hospital in London following his loss at Wimbledon in 2019.
The Australian tennis player, now 28, admitted to engaging in destructive behavior such as excessive drinking and drug abuse, despising the person he had become. He recounted waking up after his defeat at Wimbledon to find his father in tears, which served as a profound wake-up call.
Recognizing the need for a change, Kyrgios sought help and was admitted to a psychiatric ward in London to address his problems.
In February of the following year, Kyrgios shared on Instagram about his mental health, confessing to having experienced suicidal thoughts and struggling with daily tasks during the previous year. He pointed out self-harm scars on his arm in a photo from the Australian Open as evidence of his pain.
In the upcoming documentary Break Point, set to be released on Netflix, Kyrgios candidly admits that he genuinely contemplated suicide, mainly due to the immense pressure and expectations placed upon him. He expressed a deep dislike for the person he had become, acknowledging the strain it placed on his relationships with family and friends.
The tennis player revealed that his arm, bearing scars from self-harm, prompted him to get a sleeve tattoo as a way to cover them up. In the Instagram post, he expressed pride in his progress, stating that he had completely turned his life around and now values every moment.
Despite his setbacks, including a knee injury that required surgery, Kyrgios made a comeback and returned to the court at the Stuttgart Open in Germany, where he unfortunately lost in the opening round to China's Wu Yibing.
