Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka announced on Monday that she will not compete in the upcoming Japan Open due to an injury that previously forced her to retire from the China Open in Beijing. The Japan Tennis Association confirmed in a statement that Osaka, who was set to participate in the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka from October 14 to 20, will be unable to do so.
Despite showing promise with three victories at the China Open last week, Osaka's tournament ended abruptly in the round of 16. During her match against Coco Gauff, who went on to win the championship, she had to withdraw at the conclusion of the second set due to a back injury. "I locked my back up during practice earlier and honestly wasn't sure if I could even play but I just wanted to try," Osaka shared on social media, expressing her disappointment at the worsening condition during the match.
Osaka's last competitive appearance in Japan was notably brief, occurring two years ago at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. After winning her first-round match when opponent Daria Saville retired, she subsequently withdrew due to abdominal pains before her second-round encounter. This tournament marked her last appearance before taking maternity leave to welcome her daughter, Shai, in July 2023.
Returning to the tour in January 2024, Osaka has struggled to regain the form that earned her two Australian Open titles and two US Open championships between 2018 and 2021. Her latest withdrawal from the Japan Open is another setback as she aims to make a strong comeback on the professional circuit.
