Naomi Osaka overcame a shaky start and a rain delay to secure a straight-sets victory over Austria's Julia Grabher in the second round of the Auckland Classic on Wednesday. After an hour-long break due to rain, Osaka bounced back to win 7-5, 6-3, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open warm-up tournament.
The match was even at 5-5 in the first set before the rain, and the break provided Osaka with the opportunity to regroup and address her nerves with advice from her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.
The 27-year-old former world No. 1 came out strong after the rain delay, breaking Grabher late in the first set and again early in the second to take control of the match. Osaka's serve was a key weapon, with five aces and an impressive 80% success rate on second serves.
Despite struggling with return of serve in the first set, she managed to maintain focus and handle the pressure against a tough opponent. "She was a really tough opponent to play against," Osaka admitted, noting the difficulty of staying composed during the match.
Osaka has been working on regaining her form after returning to tennis in 2023 following the birth of her daughter, Shai. With her confidence growing, she expressed optimism about reclaiming her former success, having previously held the No. 1 ranking in early 2019 after winning her first Australian Open title. Osaka will now set her sights on the upcoming Grand Slam, which begins on January 12.
