Naomi Osaka expresses desire to compete at Paris Olympics

Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka expressed her desire to participate in this year's Paris Olympics, stating that she "would love to play" if granted a spot by tennis authorities. However, securing a place might require navigating through an appeals process due to her failure to meet the mandatory participation requirements for Japan in the Billie Jean King Cup during the current Olympic cycle.

 

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, captured global attention when she lit the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games in 2021. Despite making an early exit in the tennis competition, reaching the third round, her presence symbolized a significant moment for Japanese and global sports. Since then, she has returned to tennis after a maternity break, balancing her career with motherhood.

 

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo after aiding Japan's qualification for the BJK Cup finals, Osaka expressed her eagerness to compete in Paris if given the opportunity. Reflecting on the Olympic spirit and the sense of unity it fosters among athletes, she emphasized the joy of participating in such a celebrated event and interacting with peers from around the world.

 

While Osaka's world ranking has steadily improved since her return, reaching 193 from a low of 831, she acknowledges the need to enhance her performance on the court. With ambitions of a successful clay court and grass court season ahead, she remains focused on continuous improvement and setting high personal goals, including the pursuit of an Olympic medal if she competes in Paris. Despite her current ranking, Osaka's determination to excel and evolve with each match underscores her competitive spirit and dedication to her craft.
