Nadal Sets Up Olympic Showdown with Djokovic After Gritty Win Over Fucsovics

Posted : 29 July 2024

Rafael Nadal set up a highly anticipated Olympic clash with long-time rival Novak Djokovic on Sunday, validating his last-minute decision to compete despite injury concerns. Nadal, who has secured 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros, overcame Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round, even with strapping on his injured right thigh.

The 38-year-old appeared to be in control after swiftly taking the first set on Court Philippe Chatrier, the venue of his 14 French Open victories. However, Fucsovics, ranked 83rd in the world, elevated his game after a slow start, pushing Nadal to a decisive third set. The Hungarian held three break points for a 3-1 lead in the final set, but Nadal managed to stave off the challenge and broke back in the next game to regain momentum.

Nadal's gritty performance, including a crucial hold of serve, brought him closer to victory. After two hours and 30 minutes, the 22-time Grand Slam champion finally subdued a tenacious Fucsovics. This marks Nadal's seventh tournament of 2024, as he aims for another Olympic success, having previously won singles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and doubles gold in Rio de Janeiro four years later.

Despite a recent setback in training that jeopardized his fifth Olympic appearance, Nadal teamed up with Carlos Alcaraz in doubles on Saturday. The duo won their first-round match in straight sets, with Nadal's right thigh heavily bandaged, showcasing his determination to compete through injury.
