Karolina Muchova, ranked 49th in the world, pulled off a major upset on Friday by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to reach the China Open semifinals. Muchova triumphed 7-6 (7/5), 2-6, 6-4 in a hard-fought battle, setting up a potential clash with either China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen or 17-year-old Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva for a spot in the final. The other semifinal will feature US Open champion Coco Gauff against Spain's former world No. 2, Paula Badosa.
Sabalenka, the world No. 2, came into the match on an impressive 15-match winning streak, having recently claimed titles in Cincinnati and her first US Open crown. However, Muchova had a history of causing trouble for Sabalenka, having beaten her in their last two encounters, both of which went to deciding sets. This match proved to be equally intense, with both players pushing each other to their limits in a closely contested showdown.
In the first set, Sabalenka faced three break points early on but managed to hold firm. She had a chance to take the set at 5-4 on Muchova's serve, but a missed forehand allowed the Czech to stay in the match. Muchova capitalized on her second set point in the tiebreak, ending a thrilling rally to claim the opening set. Sabalenka bounced back in the second, breaking Muchova twice and comfortably sealing the set 6-2, but the momentum would shift again in the decider.
Neither player could hold serve consistently in the final set, but Muchova eventually prevailed, overcoming Sabalenka's power to secure the win in two hours and 46 minutes. It was a significant victory for Muchova, who has battled injuries and dropped out of the top 10 after wrist surgery sidelined her for nearly 10 months. Now, with her sights set on the final, Muchova has shown she is back in top form.
