Karolina Muchova and Coco Gauff are gearing up for their first-ever appearance in the US Open semi-finals, setting the stage for a new challenge at this prestigious event. Muchova secured her spot by defeating Sorana Cirstea in straight sets, showcasing her determination to put up a strong fight against the upcoming opponent, the crowd favorite Gauff.
Muchova, seeded 10th, demonstrated her prowess with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Cirstea, making it her second Grand Slam semi-final appearance this year, following her performance at Roland-Garros. Now, she faces the formidable task of going up against Gauff, who enjoys tremendous support from the home crowd.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Muchova praised Gauff as an outstanding player with the home advantage. She expressed her readiness to put up a strong fight in what promises to be a tough match.
Muchova's journey to the US Open semi-finals marks a remarkable turnaround in her career. Just a year ago, she was ranked 235th in the world due to a series of injury setbacks. However, she has made an impressive comeback, breaking into the top 10 and delivering deep runs at major tournaments.
Interestingly, Muchova faced Gauff in the Cincinnati final two weeks ago, where she succumbed to fatigue and lost 6-3, 6-4. Gauff clinched her first WTA 1000 title at that event and is now aiming for her first major championship on her home turf.
Describing Gauff's strengths, Muchova emphasized her athleticism, unwavering determination, agility on the court, and versatility in her game. She anticipates a challenging contest against an all-around exceptional player.
In her quarter-final match against Cirstea, Muchova got off to a flying start, breaking serve twice early on and completing the first set with a bagel in just 42 minutes. Although Cirstea offered more resistance in the second set, Muchova managed to break for a 4-3 lead and eventually sealed the match.
Cirstea, at 33 years old, was the oldest quarter-finalist at the US Open and reached this stage of a Grand Slam event for the first time in 14 years.
The other semi-finalists will be determined when Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova faces Madison Keys, and Qinwen Zheng takes on second seed Aryna Sabalenka in Wednesday's matches.
