Mirra Andreeva's Rapid Rise Continues as She Returns to WTA Top 10

Posted : 14 March 2025

Mirra Andreeva’s rapid rise in the WTA rankings has been so swift that even she struggles to keep up. The 17-year-old Russian climbed to No. 9 after winning the Dubai Tennis Championships last month, making history as the youngest WTA 1000 champion.

Along the way, she secured victories over Grand Slam winners Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, further cementing her status as one of the sport’s brightest young stars. Despite dropping to No. 11 before Indian Wells, her wins over Rybakina in the fourth round and Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals will propel her back into the top 10.

Unlike last year, when Andreeva eagerly tracked the live rankings in pursuit of a personal goal, she now pays little attention to the numbers. Previously, she had an incentive—her family promised her a dog if she broke into the top 20.

The breakthrough moment came in Beijing last October when she defeated Magda Linette, finally earning her long-awaited reward. Now, she is taking her time selecting the perfect pet and has her heart set on an ultra-mini Labradoodle, a smaller version of the popular Labrador-Poodle mix.

While her ranking is no longer a major focus, Andreeva remains deeply committed to her matches and upcoming challenges. She will now face defending champion Swiatek in the Indian Wells semifinals, acknowledging that her stunning victory over the Polish star in Dubai carries no guarantee of success this time.

Her approach to the game has evolved, as she balances her natural enjoyment of tennis with a growing sense of responsibility. No longer just about having fun, she recognizes the significance of her journey while striving to maintain a lighthearted mindset on the court.

Taking inspiration from sporting icons such as Roger Federer and LeBron James, Andreeva embraces the competitive nature of her career. While she acknowledges the growing seriousness of her profession, she believes her best tennis comes when she finds joy in the game. As she continues her remarkable ascent, the young star remains determined to compete at the highest level while staying true to the passion that fueled her rise.
