Mirra Andreeva's impressive run at the Stuttgart Open came to an end in the last 16, as she was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. The 17-year-old Andreeva, who has already claimed two titles this season, struggled to find her rhythm and was overpowered by Alexandrova in a match that lasted just over an hour.
Andreeva, who made history earlier this year by becoming the youngest winner at a WTA 1000 event in Dubai, was unable to overcome Alexandrova's solid performance.
The 30-year-old Alexandrova secured her fourth win of the season over a top-10 player with this victory. Alexandrova will now face third seed Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals after a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Poland's Magdalena Frech.
In other matches, Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over unseeded German Jule Niemeier. Paolini will meet the winner of Thursday's match between fourth seed Coco Gauff and Germany's Ella Seidel.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka will play Elise Mertens in the quarter-finals following Anastasia Potapova's withdrawal due to injury. The final quarter-final spot will be contested between Iga Swiatek and either Emma Navarro or Jelena Ostapenko.
