Mikaela Shiffrin, who achieved a historic feat by surpassing Ingemar Stenmark's record for the most Alpine skiing World Cup wins, is gearing up for another successful season. She expressed her admiration for tennis star Iga Swiatek, highlighting Swiatek's "unbeatable mentality" and the self-confidence she displays at just 22 years old. Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has made waves in the tennis world, while Shiffrin has become a dominant force in Alpine skiing.
Shiffrin and Swiatek have developed a connection in recent years, including their nominations for Sportswoman of the Year at the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards. Shiffrin praised Swiatek's modesty and the self-assuredness that comes with her success, which she wishes she had possessed at a younger age. Shiffrin expects Swiatek to regain her world No. 1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka.
As Shiffrin prepares to embark on her 2023/24 campaign with the aim of adding to her 88 World Cup wins, she looks to improve specific aspects of her skiing. While she doesn't have specific winning goals, she hopes to enhance her downhill and super-G performance and maintain the consistency in her skiing and mentality that she experienced last season.
The new season begins in Soelden, Austria on October 28, and Shiffrin aims to carry forward the positive mentality she developed in the previous season. Shiffrin also reflected on her inclusion in TIME's "100 Most Influential People" list, expressing humility and admiration for individuals making significant contributions to the world.
