Miami Open: Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Tommy Paul in a Great Last-16 Matchup for a Thrilling 2023 Form

Posted : 11 April 2023
After defeating Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4, Carlos Alcaraz is still on track to complete the Sunshine Double in 2023.
Alcaraz has only lost one match this season, to Cameron Norrie in the Rio Open final. He has won Indian Wells and is currently in the Miami Open quarterfinals, where he will play Taylor Fritz.
At the Miami Open, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tommy Paul 6-4 6-4 in a thrilling matchup in the round of 16.
Although the Florida crowd saw several spectacular shots and rallies from both players during the match, Alcaraz ultimately prevailed.
“I feel at home here,” said Alcaraz. “It’s easy to play for me in Miami with all the energy I receive from the crowd, it’s amazing.
“I enjoy it and I think that’s the key why I play at such a high level for every match. I’m really happy with the level I’m playing and hope to keep going.
“I played a really great match and hope to play the same level in the quarter-finals. I moved well, defended very well and attacked as well. If I play the same level I’m going to have a lot of chances to get through the quarter-finals.”

After defeating Holger Rune, the number one player in the world will play another American, Taylor Fritz, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The first four games were evenly matched before Alcaraz broke Paul to take a 3-2 lead after an amazing point in which he raced from the back of the court to retrieve the ball back in play.

Minutes after missing the chance to double break, Paul had a break point opportunity at 5-4 down but was unable to capitalize on it as Alcaraz served himself out of danger to win the set in 49 minutes.

Alcaraz continued to exert a ton of pressure with his powerful forehand in the second set, displaying even more brilliance.
He made the crucial break in the third game, and Paul had little opportunity to break back on Alcaraz's serve.
The remaining games were won on serves, guaranteeing Alcaraz's spot in the round of eight.
