Miami Open 2023 Results: Dusan Lajovic Defeats Andy Murray in Straight Sets
Posted : 11 April 2023
At the Miami Open, two-time champion Andy Murray was defeated in straight sets by Dusan Lajovic.
The 76th-ranked Serb defeated former world number one Murray, a winner in 2009 and 2013, 6-4, 7-5.
It occurs one week after the 35-year-old Scottish loses to Jack Draper in Indian Wells' third round due to exhaustion.
Kyle Edmund, a fellow Briton, is also eliminated after falling to Wu Yibing 7-5, 7-5, and Bianca Andreescu defeated Emma Raducanu in the women's draw.
Murray, who is ranked 52nd in the world, opened his 2023 season with a grueling seven set victories that went the distance.
But when Lajovic, 32, forced the first serve break in game seven and went on to win the opening set, he was unable to muster the necessary response.
Murray instantly broke back to tie the second set at 5-5, giving a hint that another thrilling comeback might be in the works.
But when Murray framed a forehand, Lajovic soon put an end to those hopes with another break, and he was relieved to serve out the victory in straight sets.
"When I didn't close it out I thought it's happening again," Lajovic, who will play American Maxime Cressy, said of Murray's ability to battle back.
"Some days you obviously don't hit the ball your best, but my movement wasn't great today," Murray said.
"I served pretty well, but the rest of the game was a bit of a problem."
Murray is now 8-5 overall for the season, which is a disappointing result considering he hadn't lost in the first round of a tournament since early January.
