Mengel Shocks Harimoto, Mori Dominates Diaz: WTT Series Roundup

Posted : 24 May 2024

In a riveting Men's Singles match, the 2nd seed suffered a surprising defeat as Steffen Mengel outplayed Tomokazu Harimoto, securing a thrilling victory after battling through two match points to win 8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 6-11, 15-13.

Mengel, ranked 64th in the world, has been showcasing a resurgence in his form, highlighted by his recent triumphs in two WTT Feeder Series events. Once ranked as high as No. 25 in 2015, the formidable German appears poised to reclaim his former glory if he can sustain this level of performance. Up next for Mengel in the round of 16 is a showdown with Jules Rolland.

Sakura Mori dominated her Women's Singles match against Adriana Diaz, displaying exceptional skill and speed as she swept past the 3rd seed with a commanding 3-0 victory (11-5, 11-7, 11-7). Despite her current ranking of World No. 60, Mori showcased a level of play far beyond her standing, maintaining control from start to finish against the 11th-ranked player in the world.

This win marks Mori's second consecutive triumph over Diaz, setting up a tantalizing round of 16 clash with Christina Kallberg. With two WTT Feeder Series titles under her belt in this ranking period, Mori aims to break her streak of quarterfinal exits in the WTT Series, a feat she has not achieved in the past 12 months.

In the realm of home defense, top seed Hugo Calderano, dubbed the 'thrill from Brazil,' easily dispatched his opponent Manav Vikash Thakkar in straight games (11-5, 11-8, 11-7) to advance in the tournament. The excitement continued for local fans as Leonardo Iizuka, a qualifier from the region, defied expectations by defeating World No. 104 Can Akkuzu 3-1 (10-12, 11-8, 16-14, 11-7).

Despite a back-and-forth exchange in the initial games, Iizuka's resilience shone through in the crucial third game, where he saved two game points to seize a 2-1 lead before ultimately securing the match victory. The 18-year-old newcomer will carry his momentum into the next round of the WTT Series main draw, where he is set to face off against Shunsuke Togami.
