Daniil Medvedev faced a hostile crowd at the Paris Masters as he suffered a turbulent defeat to Grigor Dimitrov. The world No. 3 was jeered during the match and even considered refusing to continue playing until the noise from the stands subsided. He then appeared to make a gesture that some interpreted as a middle finger, though he later claimed he was simply checking his nails with a smile.
Medvedev's tempestuous match ended with a 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(2) defeat to Dimitrov, during which he saved six match points. The Russian was booed when he smashed his racquet on the court in the second set, and he responded by shushing the crowd. He even seemed like he might refuse to continue playing while waving his arms and silencing gestures toward the crowd.
Explaining his perspective, Medvedev said, "I throw the racquet, I get booed. Normal. I don't see a problem with that." He mentioned that he didn't want applause when he was serving, which led to his initial refusal to continue playing due to the persistent boos. Ultimately, he chose to play on after receiving a code violation.
While the match did continue, Medvedev remained frustrated, smashing another racquet and trying to play with it. As he left the court following the defeat, he appeared to gesture with his middle finger, which he later dismissed as checking his nails.
Despite the crowd's hostility, Dimitrov advanced to the last 16, where he will face Alexander Bublik. Medvedev also reflected on his previous success in the tournament when no fans were present during the Covid-19 pandemic, suggesting a preference for a quieter environment.
