Daniil Medvedev bounced back from an opening loss to defeat Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-4 in his second match at the ATP Tour Finals. The fourth seed, who had been visibly frustrated during his loss to American Taylor Fritz on Sunday, looked much more composed in Tuesday's victory. Medvedev, 28, had been booed by the crowd after his antics in the first match, but he responded by putting his fingers in his ears as he sealed the win.
The Russian showed impressive serving, losing just nine points on his serve as he wrapped up the match in an hour and 18 minutes. Reflecting on his performance, Medvedev explained that he focused on blocking out distractions, including his own thoughts. “I really didn’t care what was happening on the court, I just tried to play, and it was a good feeling,” he said. Medvedev emphasized the challenges that come with fame, noting how public opinion can swing from adulation to criticism in an instant.
Medvedev's superb ball-striking was on full display as he broke De Minaur in the third game of the match with a brilliant cross-court winner. He then gained a double break after De Minaur double-faulted, and he comfortably took the first set in 40 minutes. The Australian fought hard in the second set, but Medvedev's stunning backhand at 5-4 put him in control, and he held serve to secure the win.
In other action, Britain's Henry Patten and his partner Harri Helioevaara are closing in on a spot in the doubles semi-finals after a second consecutive victory. The British-Finnish duo triumphed 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 over Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, repeating their Wimbledon final result. Patten and Helioevaara are aiming to become the first team since 2018 to win both Wimbledon and the ATP Finals in the same season.
