Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador and his partner Mate Pavic from Croatia claimed victory in the French Open men's doubles final on Saturday, defeating the Italian duo Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-5, 6-3. This win marked the first Grand Slam title for the ninth-seeded pair, with Arevalo, 33, previously winning the French Open men's doubles title in 2022 alongside Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer, while Pavic, 30, has now secured men's doubles titles in all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Expressing their joy after the win, Pavic, who now has seven Grand Slam titles to his name, including three mixed doubles titles, thanked Arevalo for their successful partnership, acknowledging Arevalo's experience and contribution. Arevalo reciprocated the sentiment, emphasizing the challenging journey they had undertaken together and their shared achievement.
The first set of the final was tightly contested until 5-5 when Bolelli and Vavassori threatened to break, but Arevalo and Pavic saved four break points, winning the crucial game and breaking their opponents in the next to clinch the set. Despite Bolelli and Vavassori's early break in the second set, Arevalo and Pavic swiftly responded, breaking back and then securing another break to establish a decisive 5-3 lead.
Acknowledging their opponents' performance, Vavassori praised Arevalo and Pavic for their outstanding match, expressing hope for a future victory against them. Bolelli extended his wishes to the winners and wished them luck for the remainder of the season, showing sportsmanship despite their defeat.
