Posted : 27 April 2023
Wildcard Mirra Andreeva defeated Leylah Fernandez at the Madrid Open to become the third 15-year-old to win a WTA 1000 main-draw match.
On Wednesday, 194th-ranked Russian Andreeva defeated the Canadian in the first round with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Andreeva, who turns 16 on Saturday, held off six break points from world No. 49 Fernandez by saving five of them.
On Thursday, she faces Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in the second round.
The same accomplishment was accomplished by Americans CiCi Bellis and Coco Gauff in the Miami Open in 2015 and 2019, respectively.
Andreeva is the youngest player in the top 300 in the WTA world rankings and is competing without a flag due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
