Madrid Open: Daniil Medvedev overcomes Alexander Shevchenko, advance to the last 16

The 96th-ranked Shevchenko had caused a major upset by winning the opening set, but ultimately experience won out, as Medvedev advanced to play either Alex de Minaur or Aslan Karatsev.
With a 4-6 6-1 7-5 victory over Alexander Shevchenko, Daniil Medvedev advanced into the Madrid Open's round of 16.
The opening set was lost by Medvedev to an outstanding Shevchenko, who has recently found success after taking home the Madrid Challenger title last month. The 22-year-old appeared at ease on the big platform.
But Medvedev used all of his expertise and courtroom savvy to prevail. In his post-match remarks on the court, he thanked Shevchenko and expressed his optimism for his future.
"He plays well, he's young so I'm sure he's going to go up the rankings, especially [if] he plays like this tournament," Medvedev said.
"I've practiced with him before so I know that he can play very good. I'm very happy that I managed to beat him.
"I felt like I played well second and third set, and maybe the end of the first.
"The thing about clay - usually it's tough for me to start matches for whatever reason. I need a lot of time to get used to everything that's happening on the court.
"And the third set could be a little bit better in crucial moments - or maybe a lot better - but finally I won, so that counts also."
At his third attempt, Shevchenko stunned Medvedev by breaking in the first game. The world no. 96 then sped into a 4-0 lead by breaking Medvedev once more in the third game.
The following four games were all served, but with the score at 5-1 in the seventh game, Medvedev had to save two set points.
By breaking Shevchenko for the first time in the match, Medvedev was able to close the gap to 5-3. He then won the following game on his own serve.
Shevchenko, though, managed to hold on to win the first game 6-4.
But Medvedev stormed back in the second set, so there would be a response.
After sprinting into a 5-0 lead and breaking Shevchenko twice, the 27-year-old was headed for a bagel.
