Madrid Open 2023 update: Elena Rybakina loses, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek win

Carlos Alcaraz, the tournament's top seed, battled back to defeat Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland in the opening round of his title defense at the Madrid Open.
Spain's Alcaraz, who turns 20 the following week, overcame a sluggish start to defeat the world number 41 with a score of 2-6 6-4 6-2.
Iga Swiatek, the top seed for ladies, had less worries as she defeated Julia Grabher of Austria 6-3, 6-2.
However, Russian Anna Kalinskaya unexpectedly defeated Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
The Madrid Open, a major clay-court event leading up to the French Open, which begins on May 28, is one of the most renowned competitions outside of the Grand Slams.
Alcaraz is the favorite to win the ATP Masters 1000 competition as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are both injured and unable to compete.
The world's second-ranked player successfully defended his Barcelona championship last week without dropping a set, but upon returning to the Spanish city, his strokes initially lacked confidence and precision.
