Madison Keys wins second Eastbourne title, seventh WTA title

Posted : 01 July 2023
Madison Keys showcased her dominance as she secured a straight-set victory over Daria Kasatkina to claim her second Eastbourne International title. The 28-year-old American triumphed with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (15-13), capturing her seventh WTA title in an hour and 42 minutes of play.

Keys breezed through the first set, exhibiting her confidence with a commanding opening service game and a flawless love break. Despite missing championship points in the second-set tie-break, she ultimately sealed the contest in her favor.

This win marks Keys' first WTA title since her success at the Adelaide 250 tournament in January 2022, highlighting her return to the winner's circle.

In the match, Keys wasted no time in asserting her dominance, swiftly taking a 4-1 lead in the second set after an early break. However, Kasatkina, ranked 14 places above Keys at world number 11, staged a comeback and even had an opportunity to serve for the set at 6-5 before it progressed to a thrilling tie-break.

During the topsy-turvy tie-break, Keys let slip three championship points on her serve, while Kasatkina also missed a chance to level the match. Eventually, on her fourth opportunity, Keys emerged victorious, concluding a marathon rally with a powerful cross-court forehand.

Reflecting on her triumph, Keys expressed her delight, stating, "To win here again gives me really good memories of Eastbourne, it feels like home." She also acknowledged the tension of the tie-break and apologized to Kasatkina for the numerous lets, attributing them to repeatedly hitting the top of the net during the match.
