Madison Keys Shocks Sabalenka to Win First Grand Slam at Australian Open

Posted : 25 January 2025

Madison Keys achieved a stunning upset in the Australian Open final on Saturday, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to claim her first Grand Slam title at the age of 29. The victory ended Sabalenka’s hopes of becoming the first woman in 26 years to secure three consecutive Melbourne Park singles titles. Keys celebrated wildly after her triumph, shouting with joy and wiping away tears as she triumphed over the defending champion in a thrilling match.

Despite Sabalenka’s strong comeback in the second set and her determination to defend her title, the Belarusian's 20-match win streak at Melbourne Park was snapped. The loss left Sabalenka visibly emotional as she buried her face in a towel, reflecting on the end of her dominant run. On the other hand, for Keys, this victory marked the end of a 15-year journey, from a teenage prodigy to a Grand Slam winner.

Keys, seeded 19th, had long been considered a future tennis star. She had won her first WTA Tour match at just 14 years old and was once tipped to become world No. 1. Ten years ago, she made her first major semifinal appearance at the Australian Open as a 19-year-old, but it took until now for her to fulfill that potential and claim a Grand Slam title.

With her win, Keys joins a select group as the fourth oldest first-time major champion in the Open Era, further solidifying her place in tennis history. The victory is not just a personal triumph but a testament to her perseverance and dedication to her craft after years of near-misses at the sport's biggest stages.
