Madison Keys advances to US Open semi-finals with convincing victory over Wimbledon champion

Posted : 07 September 2023
Madison Keys has secured her spot in the US Open semi-finals with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. The world No. 17 demonstrated her prowess on the court, limiting Vondrousova's effectiveness in rallies and emphasizing her improved service game.

This marks Keys' third semi-final appearance at Flushing Meadows, and her opponent in the semi-finals will be none other than Aryna Sabalenka, the incoming world No. 1. Keys has displayed remarkable form throughout the tournament, notably defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals while only conceding four games.

Keys adopted a strategic approach, playing deep in the court and occasionally venturing to the net to disrupt her opponent's rhythm. This tactic proved successful as she dominated the first set in just 39 minutes. Although the second set proved to be a closer contest, Keys demonstrated resilience by saving six break points before securing a pivotal break in the ninth game and ultimately serving out the victory.

The American player explained her strategy, highlighting her focus on her serve: "I have been really focusing on the serve. It's funny, Bjorn [Fratangelo, Keys' boyfriend and coach] has been wanting me to go after it more, so he said if I hit a 121 I get anything I want. I hit a 119 tonight, so I was so close. No, honestly, it's just I feel like I've just been trying to pick my spots and be really smart with it. I think these courts, for the most part, are kind of taking the ball pretty well. So there is really no immediate need to overdo things."

Vondrousova, who achieved a remarkable victory at Wimbledon as an unseeded player in July, acknowledged the challenge she faced in this match: "I'm always trying to play maybe longer balls, and today I felt like I was under so much pressure from the first point. Yeah, there wasn't so much to do, honestly. It was very tough. Even on my serve, when I put a second serve, I was under very much pressure."
