Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti secured another chance to face Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros after defeating Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday night on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Musetti, the No. 30 seed, will challenge the world No. 1 and defending champion, hoping to surpass his previous best performance at the tournament. This victory over Monfils ended the Frenchman's 17th appearance at Roland-Garros, a remarkable career run in his home tournament.
Three years ago, in his Roland-Garros main-draw debut, Musetti, then an unseeded 19-year-old, led Djokovic two sets to love in the fourth round before retiring in the fifth set. Last year, he reached the round of 16, only to be defeated by Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. To equal his best performance, Musetti will need to deliver an exceptional game against Djokovic, but first, he convincingly overcame Monfils.
Monfils started strong, aiming for his first third-round appearance in five years. He led 3-1 and 4-2 in the first set and served for it at 5-4. However, Musetti rallied, breaking Monfils in the tenth game and holding serve in a critical 11th game. Musetti’s decisive play, highlighted by a first-ball backhand winner and an unreturnable serve, allowed him to claim the first set and control the match.
The second set saw Musetti dominate, breaking Monfils twice and amassing a dozen winners. In the third set, both players served well, but Musetti broke through in a pivotal ninth game with two forehand winners.
Musetti’s overall performance was marked by consistency and precision, hitting 31 winners against 17 unforced errors and converting six of 11 break points. This victory not only halted Monfils' quest for his 40th main-draw win at Roland-Garros but also marked Musetti’s 50th tour-level clay-court win, enhancing his reputation at the tournament.
