During the action-packed Tuesday at IGA Stadium, tennis enthusiasts were treated to a diverse range of outcomes. From a triumphant comeback by a "revenante" securing her first victory in over three years, to a local favorite's brilliant performance, and a one-sided showdown between former champions – the essence of tennis was on full display.
Setting the stage on Centre Court, Caroline Wozniacki commenced the next phase of her career. The draw smiled upon the 2010 Montreal NBO champion and former world number one as she faced a qualifier in her maiden professional match post the birth of her two children. Wozniacki showcased minimal rustiness, clinching a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australia's Kimberly Birrell.
In the following day session, Leylah Fernandez returned to her hometown as a celebrated athlete, much to the delight of numerous fans eager to witness the 2021 U.S. Open finalist's performance in Montreal. Fernandez kicked off her campaign in fine form, dispatching Peyton Stearns – who had previously defeated her this year in Morocco – in straight sets of 6-2 and 6-3.
The day's matches predominantly favored the more seasoned players, including recent Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, 2022 OBN finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Roland-Garros finalist Karolina Muchova.
The evening schedule presented a clash between two former NBO champions: Canada's Bianca Andreescu (2019) and Italy's Camila Giorgi (2021). Despite her strong showings in Paris and London, the Canadian seemed to hold the edge in this encounter, especially with home crowd support. However, it was Giorgi who harnessed the magic of Montreal, decisively triumphing over Andreescu with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.
The outcome was surely a disappointment for Andreescu, but she graciously took the time to sign autographs for her young fans eagerly awaiting her outside the court.
The day's most unexpected result in terms of rankings came courtesy of Marie Bouzkova, a semifinalist in Toronto in 2019. The Czech created a surprise upset by ousting the 5th-ranked Caroline Garcia, securing victory with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 on Court Rogers.
