Leylah Fernandez defeats Mirra Andreeva in the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, overcoming a set deficit in the second round, marking her first WTA victory

Posted : 13 October 2023
Fernandez's 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win was a reversal of their previous meeting five months ago, which had marked Andreeva's first WTA victory and a stepping stone to her rise into the Top 50. In their rematch, the young Andreeva initially outplayed Fernandez, breaking for a 3-1 lead and taking the first set with a fine forehand pass.

However, Fernandez employed a different strategy, committing to forecourt aggression and frequently advancing to the net. This tactical shift began paying off in the second set as she dominated the majority of the games, claiming 11 of the next 13.

Fernandez's net approaches were fruitful, winning 17 out of 27, and her aggressive approach yielded 36 winners compared to Andreeva's 16. Although Andreeva mounted late resistance in the decider, it wasn't enough to stop Fernandez, who secured the victory with two unreturnable serves, advancing to her fourth quarterfinal this year.

In the quarterfinals, Fernandez will face Linda Fruhvirtova, who triumphed in an all-teenage match against Alina Korneeva, winning 6-3, 7-5. This sets up a first-time encounter between Fernandez and Fruhvirtova, the 2022 Chennai champion, who secured her third quarterfinal appearance of the season.

Fernandez's determination and adaptability in her match against Andreeva demonstrated her fighting spirit and ability to find solutions on the court, setting the stage for an exciting showdown with Fruhvirtova.

In other notable matches, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova claimed her third Top 20 victory of the season by defeating No.2 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-5, 1-6, 6-1. Martina Trevisan endured a lungbuster against Magdalena Frech, emerging victorious with a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 scoreline in a match that lasted 2 hours and 46 minutes. Trevisan will face No.3 seed Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals after Mertens held off a late charge by qualifier Sofya Lansere to win 6-3, 7-6(5).
