Nick Kyrgios has secured a spot in the main draw of the 2024 Australian Open by utilizing his protected ranking. The 29-year-old Australian has not participated in a Grand Slam since his quarter-final appearance at the 2022 US Open, and has struggled with a series of injuries, including knee, foot, and wrist issues, over the past two years.
Kyrgios, who has not competed since June 2023, plans to return to action at the World Tennis League event in Abu Dhabi in December, ahead of his first competitive tournament at the Brisbane International later that month.
Joining Kyrgios in the Australian Open main draw are several British players, including Jack Draper, Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, and Jodie Burrage. Draper, the British number one, aims to build on his strong performance at the US Open in September, where he reached the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Kartal will be making her main draw debut in Melbourne, and Burrage will be hoping for a better result after her first-round exit in 2024.
Belinda Bencic, who missed all of this year's Grand Slams after the birth of her daughter, will also use her protected ranking to enter the Australian Open. The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist is returning to Grand Slam action after a hiatus. Former world number four Kei Nishikori will also return to the tournament using his protected ranking, marking his first appearance in Melbourne since 2021.
Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are both confirmed for the event, with Sinner leading the men's rankings and Sabalenka topping the women's. Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record 11th Australian Open title, is also on the list, making him one of the favorites for the tournament. The Australian Open is set to begin on January 12, 2024.
