Kyrgios and Djokovic team up ahead of Australian Open

Posted : 17 December 2024

Nick Kyrgios has announced that he will partner with former rival-turned-friend Novak Djokovic in the doubles competition at the upcoming Brisbane International, which serves as preparation for the Australian Open. This marks a significant shift in their relationship, which was once defined by public criticism but has since evolved into mutual respect.

In 2021, Kyrgios famously referred to Djokovic as “a tool,” a remark that highlighted the tension between the two players. However, their relationship has notably improved in recent years. Kyrgios shared the news of their partnership on Instagram, posting a picture of the pair walking together at Wimbledon, accompanied by the caption: “Doubles at Brisbane. See y’all there.”

The two players have faced each other on a major stage before, most notably in the 2022 Wimbledon final, where Djokovic claimed victory in four sets. Despite the competitive nature of their encounters, their rivalry has softened, paving the way for this unexpected doubles collaboration.

The Brisbane International is set to begin on December 29 and will provide a key opportunity for both players to fine-tune their game ahead of the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 12 in Melbourne. The tournament will attract significant attention as fans eagerly watch this high-profile doubles pairing in action.

Kyrgios, now 29, is working towards a comeback after an extended period on the sidelines due to persistent injuries. The Australian has been largely absent from the competitive circuit over the past two years but remains a fan favorite, particularly in Melbourne, where his dynamic style and entertaining personality have made him a crowd magnet.

The Canberra-born player will enter the main draw of the Australian Open using a protected ranking, which allows him to compete despite his recent lack of matches. His return has generated excitement among Australian fans who are eager to see him regain his form on home soil.

Kyrgios has previously expressed gratitude to Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, for inspiring him to persevere through his injury struggles. The Serbian star’s influence and support have played a role in Kyrgios’ determination to return to tennis, adding another layer of intrigue to their new partnership on the doubles court.
