Kimberly Birrell Stuns Emma Navarro as Grigor Dimitrov Advances

Posted : 01 January 2025

At the Brisbane International, Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell delivered a stunning upset by defeating second seed Emma Navarro in straight sets, dealing a blow to Navarro's preparations for the Australian Open.

Despite being ranked 113th and lacking a top-100 career ranking, Birrell, who trains at the Queensland Tennis Centre, played with confidence and composure, much to the delight of the home crowd. She will next face Anastasia Potapova in the last 16, saying she embraced her underdog status and played with a fearless mindset.

Meanwhile, defending men's champion Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) victory over Australian wildcard Aleksandar Vukic. Dimitrov, the world No 10, cruised through the first set and survived a second-set challenge from Vukic, who raised his level of play.

The Bulgarian, a two-time Brisbane winner, expressed optimism about his form, stating that he was beginning to find his rhythm but was focused on further improvement with each match.

In doubles action, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios' partnership came to an end in the second round as they were narrowly defeated by top seeds Michael Venus and Nikola Mektic.

The match, which featured a tight first set and a comeback from the top seeds in the match tiebreak, ended 6-2, 3-6, 10/8 in favor of Venus and Mektic.

Despite being down three points in the tiebreak, Venus and Mektic rallied to clinch the win, with Venus acknowledging the challenging play of his opponents.

Dimitrov's next challenge will come against either Australian Jordan Thompson or American Alex Michelson, as he looks to continue his strong run in Brisbane.
